SeRP Forms is part of SeRP’s Data Collection programme of work. SeRP is developing a data collection system for capturing form data. The system works using an underlying workflow that drives surfacing and collecting questionnaire data.

Data Collection is a key component of any Trusted Research Environment (TRE) or Secure Data Environment (SDE). It drives infrastructure developments to keep it safe, make it securely accessible, leading to societal improvements through the insights it offers domain researchers.

The solution has been developed for SeRP tenant, UK MS Register, and BraiNWaves, a SeRP Hub inside the Dementias Platform UK Data Portal tenancy. SeRP Forms has been designed to be flexible and can be adapted to any tenancy’s needs.

SeRP Governance – File Outs is part of SeRP’s Project Lifecycle programme of work. The programme is designed to improve project management for TRE tenancies. The programme will help tenants to track all activities, including data provisioning, taking place within their environment and help tenants to manage data access applications and support data asset catalogues.

SeRP Governance – File Outs is a solution that allows for the selection of multiple reviewers to check file out requests with a fully auditable systems log.

Currently, assigning reviewers to file out review is done manually across SeRP tenancies and does not easily allow for multiple reviewers on file out reviews.

The review of research outputs is a crucial element of the Five Safes – Safe Outputs controls that Trusted Research Environments (TREs) employ to ensure safe, legal use of anonymised data for research. The resulting outputs from a researcher’s data analysis are reviewed to ensure there is no risk to individual re-identification and that the outputs confirm to the agreed terms of data use when the research project was approved at the outset.

This new system, which can be adopted by all SeRP tenancies, will:

• Streamline the process of allocating multiple reviewers to each output.
• Support an adaptable workflow and forms that the tenancy can adapt themselves.
• Provide applicants with editable forms
• Deliver improved audit logs for file out review teams.

SeRP DataPortal – Assets – is part of our Data Lifecycle Management programme. This programme incorporates all elements of the data lifecycle, from data loading and discovery to data provisioning.

SeRP DataPortal is a platform for storing, finding, listing and displaying metadata. DataPortal was originally developed to hold dataset descriptions for an internet facing portfolio of the data available within a Trusted Research Environment (TRE).

DataPortal enables researchers to see a TRE’s broad catalogue of data and the opportunities for research with the potential for linkage across datasets. DataPortal is being developed to offer TRE’s the flexibility of uploading different file types to streamline the process of surfacing comprehensive metadata for their users.

In this latest iteration of DataPortal, SeRP’s TRE tenancies will also be able to create ‘profiles’ for their metadata catalogues to allow custom combinations of document types, form templates and search filters to suit their needs.

However, sharing data between academic institutions, although widely supported and acknowledged as a great enabler to scientific progress, is not yet widely practiced. The issues hindering data sharing amongst the Academic community are numerous and complex and include;

• Data owners retaining control of the data.
• Secondary user’s ability to understand and interpret others’ data sets.
• Concerns surrounding the security of storing data.
• Ensuring de-identification of sensitive data.
• The quality of data if it is to be shared.
• Having access to a data sharing process that is simple to use.

SeRP is the complete solution created to solve such issues and opens the way to risk-free, safe and secure data sharing and data linkage in an uncomplicated manner requiring minimum time and effort.

SeRP ensures that;

• Any access to the data is strictly controlled by the data owner and relieves any legal uncertainty to ensure appropriate and agreed use for further research.
• The data management facilities include automatic analysis of the data for quality assessment, and a comprehensive metadata cataloguing system that enables interoperability and removes any effort on the part of the data owner to have to explain the content of the data.
• It allows permitted users to make sense of data sets and prevents misinterpretation without any additional assistance being required from the data owner.
• Previous problems that are typically associated with the physical act of sharing data, such as how and wherewill researchers using the owner’s data store and protect it, are no longer a concern as data stored in a SeRP provides complete reassurance of being contained within a robust, accredited and highly regulated environment.

SeRP simplifies the data sharing and linkage processes in a safe yet accessible environment making it easy for Academics to embrace and engage with the practice of sharing data without the need for technical skills.

SeRP Loading Bay is part of our Data Lifecycle Management programme. This programme incorporates all elements of the data lifecycle, from data loading and discovery to data provisioning.

SeRP Loading Bay will improve the process for tenant’s data ingest through an improved user interface and comprehensive user documentation.

SeRP Research Registry – TRAF – is part of SeRP’s Project Lifecycle programme of work. The programme is designed to improve project management for TRE tenancies. The programme will help tenants to track all activities, including data provisioning, taking place within their environment and help tenants to manage data access applications.

Research Registry is a project to improve project lifecycle management which to date has led to the implementation of a system that tracks all project activities including:

• Application management of TRE access requests
• Data provisioning and acquisitions
• Details of active projects
• Breakdowns of research areas and dataset usage
• Research outputs

SeRP’s innovation team are now developing the next iteration of the Project Lifecycle programme to incorporate fileout review systems and the Researcher Registry.
